Using Twitter For Link Building

Links on Twitter are already nofollowed and most are shortened anyway by a shortener. What use can Twiitter be for link building? Link building Eric Ward says the site is perfect for finding niche experts.

It’s not about huge amounts of followers or traffic spikes. You can get that kind of traffic from Digg. But the advantage of Twitter, says Ward, is that people specific to an industry are out there, findable on Twitter.

So if you specialize in little plastic doohickeys they put on shoestrings, irrelevant traffic is not what you’re after. At Search Engine Land, Ward explains how a message that begins as a tweet ends up as a link from a highly trusted website:

A few weeks ago I announced a new site via URLwire, and whenever I do this I set up several alerts/trackers to see where mentions/links show up.  I also set up a Twitter search for that new URL….the new site I announced has been tweeted or re-tweeted by seven people…I discovered all of them were health experts in one form or another.  Also, all of them had several hundred followers (one had 780), and a quick check of a few dozen of those showed some overlap (expected) as well as frequent health URL tweets.  In other words, I’d found a loose community of several thousand collective Twitterer’s who had shared news about a new web site URL.

One of those re-tweets came from a librarian at a med school web site, who did one more thing with that URL. She added a link to it from the med school web site she’s in charge of editing.  What started to her as a tweet ended as a permanent link from her high trust web page.

What’s even better about that is that earned link was a free, organic one, the best kind. No manipulation, no buying, no trading. And that one very trusted link is likely to outweigh many links (however they’re gotten) from not-so-trusted websites.

  • http://www.fanhistory.com/wiki/File:Twitter_Fan_History_November_2008_to_April_12_2009.jpg Laura

We use Twitter for link building on Fan History. We generally get between 1 and 5 visits a day as a result of that. I spend a fair amount of time on Twitter for networking, and general brand building. I don’t think it is worth spending as much time as most people advocate. I certainly don’t think blackhat Twitter follower gaining methods are worth it. If you can’t follow conversations because you’re following so many people, don’t except the people you’re following to be able to view you in return. Unless you’re providing great content and networked with the right people already, it just isn’t going to work to any great volume of traffic. And any one who says differently? Show me the metrics that support that.

All those ‘get 100,000 tweeters in 24 hours..’ is just so wrong it is untrue. I have an experiment going at the moment and so far I have got http://twitter.com/pokerknave2 with a byline ”Don’t expect humble pie, you mug…”.

    I hope this helps.

I think that the best way to build links is to have interesting content on your own website. Surely, rich content is a better honey pot than a cheap shot at SEO improvements!

PS, my site is on espadrilles so the link i’ve made will earn me points with Google. Not sure if this is the best way to build a successful business but every little helps :)

I don’t accept linkbuilding is a SEO factor. It has to do with Page Rank, not with Search Rank.
I describe how to improve your Search Rank just by improving your content and keywords.

  • http://www.whatcom.it communiGator

I agree with the article: Twitter is not meant to drive huge traffic on your site, but it can be considered a very useful way to build trusted links and commercial/cultural relationships.
In other words, Microblogging is not iteself the proper way to create and share high quality contents, but it can be used to drive niche interests to your own valuable contents/services that users can find on your site.

Even if Twitter links are “nofollow” you’re still receiving targeted traffic (most of the time) as the people who follow you on Twitter will be either friends with you, or just share your interests.

And like Eric says, if they find it that helpful then there’s a chance of getting a permalink linking back to your website that you’re tweeting about.

    Good article.

In webmaster tools the links from twitter are showing up in my external links section. They are counting for something!

  • http://www.seosean.com Affordable SEO Services

I still have doubts that Twitter will bring you a lot of links. I can see how you can get found out about and someone will add a link to your site but I think this would be just as effective as some of the other social bookmarking sites, article sites and press release sites. So it could help but I would not put all my eggs in that basket.

I believe Twitter is better for networking and developing relationships in your field. Once you have established communication they may put a link on their website just as explained in this article.

I joined Twitter as seoace for networking purposes rather than to build links.

  • http://www.freeuniquearticles.com Article Guru

Thats seems like new way to harness the power of twitter.
I have also seen people using twitter to promote their CPA offers but don’t know how successful they actually are.
    Any views on that?

  • http://mdssolutions.co.uk Website Darlington

It’s all about the traffic that it generates though, not the links. If you get enough people seeing a link to your site, you’re bound to get a percentage of the visit it. If you get a percentage visiting it, you’re quite likely that some of them will link to it if they found it useful. As long as the numbers and percentages are workable, then it stands to reason that it will generate you links.

I just started on twitter a week ago. my first update was about building links for my site and within a few hours a fellow webmaster/ college student had found me , by topic i suppose and began to follow.. Next day i had 48 links to his posts. I guess the question is how effective the links are, if organic tops all then yay! So how worried should i be about bad links. Also can anyone tell me exactly where the links are. all i did was post a comment on an article then i had links, i’m not clear on how that works..?????
