Union Files Complaint Against Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart plans to close down a store in Quebec that happens to be the first unionized outlet in the continent.

The union plans to file a complaint against Wal-Mart.

The union has said it’s organizing about a dozen other Wal- Mart stores in Quebec and holding recruitment drives in at least 10 others in Canada. It is targeting Wal-Mart because it’s concerned that the company’s expansion into food retailing will put pressure on Canadian rivals such as Loblaw Cos., the country’s largest supermarket chain, to cut wages.”

“Wal-Mart never had any intention of reaching a collective agreement” in Jonquiere, said Michael Fraser, national director of United Food and Commercial Workers Canada. “Wal-Mart made its decision to close the store months before we sat down at the table with them. They made the decision the day the labor board certified the union.”

On a separate note, Canadian police evacuated two Wal-Marts in Gatineau, Quebec after the stores received bomb threats.
