This will be the first of several comedies shown online before they make their appearances on television screens around the nation.

“It is one of a number of pilots that BBC Television will be undertaking over the next few months, exploiting the opportunities that new technologies offer to look at how programmes might be delivered beyond the traditional linear broadcast, said Jana Bennett, director of television at the BBC.

Broadband growth has driven the BBC to explore the medium for more opportunities to present its product in more innovative ways. And with people spending more time online than in front of the television, the broadcaster needs to find ways to remain relevant to those users.

“It’s a natural progression for us to make our programmes available on broadband. More and more homes are getting connected as there are now over six million broadband subscribers in the UK,” Stuart Murphy, controller of BBC Three, said.
