Two-Year-Old Hostage Situation Ends Peacefully
These days, it seems all too common to hear stories of situations involving police which end tragically, oftentimes with innocent people being caught in collateral damage. There are those rare circumstances, though, when the news reports on the good deeds of police officers, bringing credence to the idea that not all law enforcement officers are power-hungry and incompetent.
One such story of hope occurred last night in Rapid City, South Dakota. Around 4:00 pm, the Rapid City Police Department and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting a robbery at the 1000 block of Silver Street in Rapid City. Before the officers could report to the scene of the crime, however, the suspect fled into the home of a resident living at 904 Silver Street.
Once the resident was inside the home, the suspect took a two-year-old boy hostage; everyone else in the house was able to escape without harm.
Having heard reports that the suspect, Raymond Cuny (32), had a gun, the police entered into a standoff with the intention of escaping the situation with the child hostage unharmed.
After six hours and evacuating surrounding streets and several homes, a Special Response Team (SRT) used distraction devices and door breach rounds to force entry in the home. No shots were fired during the raid, and no one was harmed during the rescue of the child.
Incredible work last night by the RC/Pennington Co Special Response Team. Child was rescued, suspect arrested, and no one was injured.

“There were a lot of intense moments tonight. We are extremely thankful that the child is safe and has been returned to his mother,” Rapid City Police Chief Karl Jegeris stated, adding “On behalf of the Rapid City Police Department, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, and South Dakota Highway Patrol, I am extremely proud of the Special Response Team and their heroic efforts.”
Raymond Cuny has been charged with first-degree kidnapping and two counts of second-degree burglary. He is currently being held in jail without bail.
