Twitters Set Up ‘Twitition’ To Save Earl

Executives stop believing in karma

If you’re a fan of the TV show “My Name Is Earl” and you haven’t yet heard the news, wipe your Cheetos fingers so you don’t get orange stripes on your face after I tell you this: NBC just cancelled it.

Yes, I know we still don’t know who Earl Jr.’s real daddy is, but there’s still hope. A Twitition (Twitter petition) is already under way.

My Name Is Earl: Cancelled Greg Garcia, the show’s creator, received the phone call at 7:30 this morning Pacific time, according to the LA Times, after getting the cold shoulder from NBC executives before the announcement of the 2009 Fall schedule. Garcia took the news in stride, looks like, and didn’t hesitate to throw a jab at the network: “It’s hard to be too upset about being thrown off the Titanic.”

Currently NBC is being crushed by other networks in terms of ratings, and though MNIE consistently attracted six million viewers (not great for Thursday night prime time), the show was also consistently in last place to dramas and reality shows on other networks, programs like Grey’s Anatomy, CSI and CSI NY, Survivor, Bones, and Hell’s Kitchen—meaning that if NBC has it’s way, there’ll be no way for smart comedy fans to escape formulaic programming and British guys who shout too much.

Well, okay, they’re pouring on the Saturday Night Live pretty heavy on Thursdays next fall, with SNL Weekend Update in Earl’s spot; NBC’s also bringing Chevy Chase back from the dead in a show called “Community.” But they’re also bringing back both tired old Law & Orders, I suppose because CBS’s CSI-All-The-Time ways are a bad influence.

NBC’s also bringing back “Chuck,” saved from cancellation by Internet geek activism.

According to the LA Times:

Ben Silverman, co-chairman of NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios, said the network opted to cancel "Earl" and "Medium" because neither the fans nor the advertisers had waged a campaign to save them the way viewers and the Subway restaurant chain did for "Chuck."

And that is obvious bullbutter because even the MNIE’s creator didn’t know the show was going to be cancelled until this morning, and I can pretty much bet fans of the show are shocked. Ethan Suplee, who plays Earl’s brother Randy, tweeted his disappointment:

“Just got the call that My Name Is Earl has been canceled. They sure did take their time with that decision or rather informing us of it.”

Alyssa Milano, who played a short-lived character on the show, retweeted the newly created Earl Twitition Twitter account, which has amassed about 400 followers in the past few hours. Maybe with some celebrity help, that will beef up.

If not, and NBC can’t be convinced to change its mind, Garcia says he’s open to a move to Fox or ABC. Both networks have expressed interest in the show, so maybe Earl can pull a “Scrubs” and switch networks. Even better if Earl could pull a “Family Guy” and actually survive the switch.

At least we might get to find out who Earl Jr.’s daddy is and whether Crabman’s gonna put up with that.

We should all mail crab claws to NBC, a la Jericho (when that show was threatened the first time around, fans sent 40,000 pounds of peanuts to CBS in protest. The show was then renewed for another, albeit unsuccessful, season).

Jay leno in prime time, Dateline, parks and rec? Who the hell is in charge of programing over at NBC? Jay is ok But what the hell is he going to do for an hour in prime time? Dateline is just the same old crime crap like murder, rape, kidnaping thats fine if you want to be bumbed out and made to feel like the world is going to s***. But I want to be cheered up and have a good time. And whats with the SNL overload? If you are on an NBC show in new york you better like burbank. You may end up there like Tina, amy, tracy and conan. Looks like if you do your time on SNL then NBC will give you a show. And better shows will get canceled before you. Iam going to follow Katie Curic and Dave lettermans lead and walk away from NBC and not look back. I hope another network is smart and gives Earl a ride.

NBC you suck! I only watch (watched) three shows on NBC, mnie, Medium and chuck. Everything else on NBC sucks. Iam sick of crime scene and cop shows and talant and celeb crap. ER and ER clones SNL and EX SNL stars and lame game shows. And for me howie DONT do it. I think the ratings are low becouse people dont like it when you start to like watching a show and then the S.O.Bs drop it and dont let you see how it ends. Who wants to watch a good movie then leave before the end? Nobody! I need to know how it ends! Once again NBC has sucked me in then pulled the rug out from under me. No more! After the jackasses get around to dropping CHUCK and it will happen all to soon I know, I will never watch any new NBC shows. NBC you keep dumping on the veiwers and thats why your in last place.

I didn’t watch all of this season (which seemed better), but the previous season (third?) where he goes to jail was pretty bad. They totally got off course. Which is not good for the premise if they already have given up on it. If it weren’t for the characters themselves, this show would have been cancelled by now already. I say, move it to ABC and air it with scrubs, get some fresh writing talent, and have more episodes dealing with the secondary characters and even the townspeople without resorting to “the list” every episode.

  9. Hopefully, the network will change their mind. With so many supporters pleading to save My name is Earl, this would definitely be possible.

I would rather have herpies than watch Amy Poehler, and for that matter, Herpies sounds better than watching NBC anymore. I think I have watched my last minute on NBC and will only turn in again to watch “my name is Earl”, nevermind just cancelled, or the miami dolphins on sunday night football, but the dolphins rarly make prime time games.

p.s. I live in orlando and I am not renewing my universal pass, or going to universal citywalk, viva la resonstonce

I know they found out that I liked Earl and decided to cancel it! It seems everything I like ends up disappearing! Someone get some organization and get a GOOD hackling campaign together.

Really NBC?! You show 3 hours of a washed up “millionaire” and several pseudo-”celebrities” act like idiots for no particular reason and you cancel a show that actually has some creativity; really?!!!

  13. “My name is Earl” is one of the few things that I watch on TV, its funny and the humour is gentle yet borders on the ‘edge’ of whats acceptable.

I am not American, and live in the UK, yet I grew up in a town with many characters like those in the show. It’s the story of one persons journey to become a better person, one step at a time. As TV shows go, its very motivating, uplifting and give people hope.

So its present network don’t want it, there loss. I hope Fox picks it up and all goes well.

The fans should have done the “Twitition” earlier imo.

Chuck/Medium/My Name is Earl all had potential to be on the chopping block.

They have really done it now. First Scrubs, now MNIE and Deal Or No Deal? The reason why their ratings are so low is NOT those shows, it is all those stupid shows they decided to keep. For example. 30 Rock, and Parks and Recreation, and even The Office! Those are perhaps the dumbest shows I have ever watched. When they let Scrubs go they didn’t even give it a proper finale which is why I am glad that ABC picked it up even though it was for one last season. I hope that MNIE does go to a different network & I also hope they are on for a long time.. and even if it only lasts a season or two then I would be happy. They could at least not leave us in a cliffhanger like NBC did.

I wouldn’t even know how to “wage a campaign” to keep Earl & Deal or no Deal on the air. I guess I would have to watch Carson Daly every night, buy an El Camino and get hit by a car a couple of times.. As for Deal or No Deal, I guess i would have to give away 1m$ once a week.. sorry but the economy is too bad to do any of those things.

Maybe I can start “Jumping for Joy” hahaha!
