Twitter Reportedly Set to Unveil ‘Fabric’ Developer Platform, Releases Schedule For Flight Conference

  • Twitter is reportedly getting ready to unveil a new application development platform by the name of Twitter Fabric. With the company’s Flight developer conference coming up this month, we should be getting a glimpse of it pretty soon.

The report comes from The Information, which says the Fabric platform includes developer tools “to help people sign up for their apps more easily, sell ads on them, uncover technical glitches and view other analytics.”

A few years back, Twitter began to tarnish its relationship with developers as it started to create its own products and features that had previously been supplied by third-party developers, pretty much rendering those developers’ products obsolete.

In fact, as recently as a month ago, Twitpic announced that it would shut down, and blamed its demise on Twitter. Thankfully for users, however, Twitpic has since been acquired, and will not shut down after all.

The new platform along with the new developer conference (the company’s first ever for mobile developers) could help the company start building back a better relationship with third-party developers who still certainly have a lot to do with Twitter data.

Flight will take place on October 22nd in San Francisco. The company announced the schedule for the event this week. It will open up with a keynote from CEO Dick Costolo, where “key team members will join him to unveil products to help mobile developers build the best apps.”

Presumably this is where we’ll first see Fabric.

The keynote will be followed by five technical sessions. The first two will be revealed at the conference (and again, are probably related to Fabric). The third will focus on Crashlytics, while the fourth will be about driving app downloads and growth, and the fifth will cover app monetization via MoPub.

The event will also include “product pods,” where developers will be able to meet Twitter engineers, and a “Lightning Theater,” for shorter talks about Twitter data and the company’s open source initiatives.
