Tweets and New Twitterers Decline in August

DDoS Attacks the Cause?

Get the WebProNews Newsletter:

August was the first month of the year in which tweets sent by Twitter users decreased. In addition, user registrations decreased for the second time this year (month-to-month).

Matthew Daines, the lead developer of the Twitter app, Twellow, has shared a couple of graphs illustrating the number of Twitter user registrations and number of total tweets for the month of August.

"The first time user registrations decreased was back in May, but that was attributable to the Oprah effect," says Daines. "The DDoS attacks probably had something to do with the drop in traffic for the month, so it will be interesting to see what happens in September."

You probably recall last month when Twitter’s service was interrupted frequently. This was the result of denial-of-service attacks against both Twitter and Facebook (among other sites).

Still, it’s hard to tell how big of an impact the attacks really had on Twitter’s numbers. You have to wonder if Twitter is getting closer to leveling out, or if it’s getting better at stopping spammers.

Thats strange, because last month I got more Follows than I ever have done before. Sadly I had to block most of them as they all seemed to be online web cam girls (aka sl*g spam).

Hmmm – August – isn’t that month where most folks take vacation? Maybe – just maybe that should also be taken into consideration. If you’re out camping in the middle of nowhere you don’t have access; if you’re hiking the Appalachian Trail every once you carry counts. Think about it.

Could be worth considering I suppose, but I don’t know the ratio of how many people go camping in August compared to June or July.

  3. I would expect the numbers to increase in September. It seems like more than ever before, businesses, schools and government agencies are creating Twitter accounts. It seems like “Twitter” is quickly becoming an important part of every organization’s marketing plan.

I think that Twitter is getting better at stopping spammers. I recently tried to access someone who had requested following me I got to a page that stated “This account has been suspended due to strange activities”.
