Tumbleweeds For Netflix Shows During Monday’s Emmys

  • Netflix originals accumulated a total of thirty-one Emmy nominations last month, but Monday night’s ceremony didn’t amount to much for them. They did manage to snag seven awards in the Creative Arts session, but those were given before the Primetime ceremony, and don’t get nearly the attention.

Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba won Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. The show also won for Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series. House of Cards only managed an award for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour).

Documentary The Square won Outstanding Picture Editing for Nonfiction Programming, Outstanding Cinematography for Nonfiction Programming, and Outstanding Direction for Nonfiction Programming.

In total, House of Cards had thirteen nominations while Orange is the New Black had twelve, The Square had four, Derek had one, and Brave Miss World had one.

It was a tough year with a lot of great competition, especially in drama. Nobody would want to have to compete against Breaking Bad, let alone in its amazing final season. At least that will be gone next year.

Netflix made history at the Emmys last year with the first awards for web-first shows. That’s old news at this point. Still, thirty-one nominations and seven wins is pretty good for year two. There’s also the fact that two of the shows that were nominated last year – Arrested Development and Hemlock Grove – hadn’t returned in time to be part of this year’s honors.
