It would be somewhat ironic if the social network named “TravBuddy” became one of the Web’s many empty, unpopular places.  Fortunately for TravBuddy, that’s not the case – the site is now celebrating its one millionth member.

One million might not sound so impressive, considering the amount of time that TravBuddy’s been around.  Yet once you consider the short period in which a great deal of progress took place . . .  ReadWriteWeb’s Josh Catone explains, “The network was launched in 2005, but over the past six months has seen its membership grow 100 fold.”

Yikes.  As Catone asks, “Why the big increase?”  And as he then answers, “One reason is clear: Facebook.”

An application known as the TravBuddy.com Countries Visited Map has, to put it bluntly, a crapload of users.  That would imply that it’s in some way good or handy, but nine of the ten most recent reviews follow Alan Killeen’s response of “[t]his is pure SHITE!!”  Go figure.

I think that’s enough uncertain, open-to-interpretation information for one article, however.  Here are some stats from the TravBuddy homepage: in addition to its 1,018,142 members, the site has “13,530 travel blogs, 9,615 travel reviews, and 333,454 travel photos.”  Nice.
