America Online announced today the acquisition of digital music subscription company, MusicNow LLC, a company previously owned by Circuit City Stores, for an undisclosed amount of money. The MusicNow website will be integrated as part of AOL's online offerings.
A preview of the new web-based digital music service is available at aolmusicnow.com Subscribers to AOL's MusicNet will be gradually upgraded to the new service.
Founded as "FullAudio" in 1999 and later purchased by Circuit City in 2004, MusicNow will operate as a stand alone, wholly owned subsidiary of AOL.
The MusicNow service offers personalization features such as the ability to view and share music profiles with other visitors.
"AOL's users have been asking for these next-generation features to be a part of their music experience - and AOL Music Now will deliver them," said Ed Fish, Senior Vice President and General Manager, AOL Premium & Subscription Services.
Through the new addition, AOL users can purchase music on an a la carte basis for $.99 per track or subscribe to the service for $.9.95 per month for unlimited streaming and downloading, or pay $14.95 per month for unlimited streaming and downloading to a computer and any "PlayForSure" compatible portable music device.
AOL says current subscribers will be able to maintain their current price plans.
The acquisition of MusicNow marks AOL's fourth acquisition of the year, following Weblogs, Inc., Xdrive, Inc., and Wildseed, Ltd.
