Apple App Store Hits 100,000

2 billion apps downloaded

Apple said today developers have created over 100,000 apps for its App Store, making it the largest application store in the world.

iPhone and iPod touch users in 77 countries can choose from a range of apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel. App Store users have downloaded over two billion apps since the launch of the store 16 months ago.

Apple says it is working to improve search and discovery of apps with new features including Genius For Apps, App Store Essentials selections, sub category listings and better customer reviews.

"The App Store, now with over 100,000 applications available, is clearly a major differentiator for millions of iPhone and iPod touch customers around the world," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

"The iPhone SDK created the first great platform for mobile applications and our customers are loving all of the amazing apps our developers are creating."

For comparison, Android has about 12,000 apps available and Blackberry has around 3,000 apps.
