Facebook Translates Websites and Apps

Announces Translation for Facebook Connect

Facebook has announced translations for Facebook Connect, which a spokesperson for the company tells WebProNews, "simplifies and streamlines the process of translating a website into any of the more than 65 different languages Facebook currently supports."

"By opening the same framework Facebook used to translate its own site, passionate communities in countries around the world can translate some of the best websites and applications into their native languages," she says.

When Facebook introduced its Translations application in early 2008, it turned translating duties over to the social network's users. The site was translated into Spanish in just two weeks, and in 24 hours it was translated into French. Now Facebook is translated into over 65 languages (all thanks to users).

Facebook Connect Translations

Translations for Facebook Connect works for  sites, as well as IFrame, or FBML (Facebook's Developer platform) - based applications. The Facebook Developer Blog gives the technical details about how it works, which I won't get into here.

For developers, Facebook Connect will be a free tool to translate their content, and potentially expand their reach. That's how Facebook is pushing the service, anyhow.
