The monthly comScore, Hitwise, and Nielsen reports concerning search market share are sometimes predictable to the point that it's almost possible to write about them ahead of time: "Google does well.  Everything else, not so much."  comScore found that Bing managed to beat the competition in August, however. 

Bing's share of the market grew from 8.9 percent in July to 9.3 percent in August, according to comScore.  Meanwhile, Yahoo's share held steady at 19.3 percent, which means that Bing is a little bit closer to nabbing second place.

Bing's actually a little bit closer to first place, too.  Google, which has a market share of around 90 percent in some countries, saw its domestic share drop from 64.7 percent in July to 64.6 percent in August.

Admittedly, Bing's small gain isn't something Steve Ballmer should fire confetti cannons over, but it's an important step.  ComScore's numbers indicate that Bing's been gaining share since May, while Google and Yahoo have either maintained their share or seen a decrease every month.

Two final notes: AOL lost 0.1 percent of market share between July and August and Ask stayed flat, if you're curious.
