Following in the footsteps of Motorola - although arguably picking a better day since it's not competing for headlines with Apple - LG made an important mobile move this morning by announcing its first Android phone, the LG-GW620.

It's important to note that, perhaps unlike Motorola and the Cliq, LG isn't betting its entire future on this Android device; in a statement, the company's president and CEO, Skott Ahn, didn't pitch it as a "something for everyone"-type solution.

"The LG-GW620 will appeal to first-time smartphone customers by offering a new and different kind of user experience," he said instead.  "Our objective is to provide a wide selection of smartphones to satisfy the diverse preferences of today's consumers.  This Android phone is just one of many smartphone models we plan to introduce worldwide in the years ahead."

Still, even though details are scarce, it looks like the LG-GW620 isn't meant to be a bargain-basement offering.  The phone will in fact come with both a 3-inch touchscreen and a slide-out QWERTY keypad.  The rumor mill indicates that it'll pack a 5-megapixel camera, too.

Google's surely hoping the LG-GW620 will sell well, leading LG to show a greater interest in Android in the future.
