July Was a Good Month for Tweeting

Though New User Growth Slowed Slightly

It appears that the number of new Twitter users has slowed a bit over the past month, although it's still growing significantly. Regardless, it hasn't prevented the number of Tweets from jumping.

It's not as though Twitter has been in the spotlight any less. News of a Twitter documentary surfaced (my interview with its creator here). Twitter launched a new homepage design (with an emphasis on search). Twitter has become the most linked to social site in email marketing campaigns according to Email Data Source. You can't turn on the TV without Twitter being referenced, whether that be by CNN, ESPN, or Conan O'Brien.

Suffice it to say, there is still plenty of interest in Twitter. Here's a look at the number of total Tweets and the number of new account registrations for the month of July:

Total Tweets

User Registrations

As you can see, there was quite a boost in the number of tweets from June to July. It's a bigger jump than there has been between any other two consecutive months this year. A sign that people are starting to "get" it perhaps?

"What I see is actual tweets sent continues to grow at a healthy pace, up 226.1 million tweets over the June total, which is almost as many tweets as were sent in the whole month of April (236.4 million), when Oprah came online," says Matthew Daines, lead developer of Twellow, who supplied the graphs. "The pace of new user registrations appears to have slowed for the month, up only 500,000 over June's 8.8 million. Still growing though at a respectable pace, I'd say."

I think it's safe to say that Twitter-mania is still going strong. Though the concept of tweeting is often ridiculed in the media, that doesn't stop the buzz from growing and growing.
