Google Webmaster Tools Updated With New Features

Usability Shines in Latest Update

Google has released an update to Webmaster Tools, with the code name "Summer Shine." The update comes with several new features.

The first new feature is that the site selector now lists all verified sites that the user owns. It also allows the user to search as they type.

Site Selector

The second new feature is the ability for users to block non-homepage sitelinks. Previously, if users owned something like example.com, they were not able to block sitelinks for something like example.com/email.

Sitelinks

The third feature lets users see URL removal requests submitted by other users for any sites they own, and revoke them if necessary. "In the past, if another webmaster for your site mistakenly removed a URL on your site and left for vacation it was a difficult process to undo the request," explains Webmaster Tools Product Manager Sagar Kamdar.

Crawler Access

The home page is also easier to navigate now. There is no a clear distinction between verified and unverified sites.

SEO with Google

The new updates to GWT are useful for basic site analysis. The SiteLinks feature makes it quick & easy to control what supporting URLs are served, as often times, some of those SiteLinks are NOT what most brands would classify as most important to Google users & potential site visitors. This really lets marketers control brand or top-level category pages when conducting optimization; that may be more popular and eye catching to Google users simply scanning SERP's before clicking.
