Camera & Microphone Coming for the iPod Touch?

Combined with Skype, this could spell trouble for some phone companies

Home based telephone providers should be quaking in their boots today. A rumor is floating around that Apple is quietly prepping the new iPod Touch, which comes with a built in camera and microphone.

iPod Touch: Camera & Microphone Coming?

Will you buy a new iPod Touch for the camera and microphone?

Why should telephone providers be scared? Think about it, couple the new iPod Touch with a Skype account or the Verizon MiFi personal hotspot creator and you have a "phone-like device" whereever you go, or where wifi is present.

Word of the new iPod touch began gaining traction when Wired stated the following:

"A well-connected source tells us those rumors are on the money, and that Apple’s factories in China are already manufacturing iPod Touch models with integrated cameras and microphones."

The source goes on to say that the new iPod's should go on sale "in two to three months".

Is Apple toying with the idea of a 100% VoIP solution? It's too early to tell... but if we we're AT&T, we would be getting a little nervous about the possibility of Apple breaking away and becoming carrier independent.

Will Apple switch iPhones to 100% VoIP in the near future? Let us know what you think.
