Innovation & Ad Spend See Bright Spots in Downturn

Nielsen Discusses the Industry with WebProNews

WebProNews had a very nice discussion with Charles Buchwalter, Senior VP of Research and Analytics at Nielsen Online. He had some quite interesting things to say. For example, he notes that despite the economic downturn, there is plenty of innovation and change happening online. Where are you spending your time online? Has recent innovation played a role in this? Tell us.

"From month to month, things don't change a lot. And sometimes from year to year, they change, but not a lot. But when you look over 5 or 6 or 10 years, this industry has transformed itself, and it been continually transforming and innovating....and one of the things that we've seen is that if you compare over the last five years the places that people are spending their time has changed dramatically."

What's changing now is how much time people are spending online and where they're spending it. Interestingly, this is having an effect on ad spend as well. Buchwalter cites three industries that are growing their online efforts significantly despite the economic downturn:

- healthcare
- packaged goods
- telecommunications
