GeoCities, that mainstay of the mid-to-late '90s Internet, is about done for. New GeoCities accounts are no longer available, and although it hasn't yet given a specific date, Yahoo has made clear that GeoCities will be shut down sometime later this year.
Yahoo acquired GeoCities in 1999. Not too long after, the service's popularity pretty well took a nosedive. Now, GeoCities finally seems to have made it onto a list of expenses that are getting cut in order to save Yahoo money and let it concentrate on different things.
A GeoCities Help entry explains, "We have decided to discontinue the process of allowing new customers to sign up for GeoCities accounts as we focus on helping our customers explore and build new relationships online in other ways."
And sure enough, there are links (and pictures and big buttons) pointing to Yahoo Web Hosting on the GeoCities homepage. At least Yahoo's making any site transfers easy on users.
A hat tip goes to Marc Chacksfield for catching the GeoCities closure notifications. Internet oldtimers who actually remember the service should consider themselves more than welcome to get nostalgic in the comments section below.

Wow, GeoCities sure does
Wow, GeoCities sure does conjure up old memories. I remember my first web page- it was going to be the "coolest page ever", it had two links, one to some Southpark .wav file clips, and I forget the other. At the bottom it said "this site will be updated with tons of awesome links shortly, check back soon" and I believe there was an animated GIF. My apologies to all those who surely checked back day after day, as alas the page never got updated and is surely long gone by now.
