As you've probably read by now (if not experienced firsthand), there was an outage for Gmail the other night. This ended up impacting a lot of businesses, and was not exactly the greatest demonstration of Google's 99.9% uptime guarantee. I guess there's always that other 0.1%.
Google has now introduced the Google Apps Status Dashboard, where users can check on the status of services like Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Talk, Google Docs, Google Sites, and Google Video.

"The Google Apps Status Dashboard represents an additional layer of transparency that we believe will be particularly useful for our business users, and it's also relevant to users of our consumer products," says Tessa Prescott of the Google Apps Sales Team.
"The Status Dashboard is the best place to check for information on service availability for Google Apps anywhere in the world," she adds. "In my role on the sales team, I regularly talk with customers to make sure that they're getting the most out of Google Apps and I think that you will find this tool indispensable in managing your Google Apps deployment."
Administrators of Google Apps for their businesses, schools and organizations can view the performance of the administrative control panel with the dashboard. Prescott points to a number of other resources for admins to find help as well.
