Safer Internet Day isn't something you're likely to find marked on a bookstore calendar, and even Wikipedia, which notes that February 10th is when Saint Paul's shipwreck is commemorated, doesn't recognize it.  The occasion's important enough within our little online community, though, and Google Australia chose to recognize it. 

On the Official Google Australia Blog, Carolyn Dalton wrote, "To mark the day, we're launching a dedicated Australian page containing online safety and security tips, as well as a new Australian Safety Centre on YouTube, containing straightforward online safety tips and resources from experts and prominent Australian safety organisations."

The primary focus of all this is to keep kids safe, so parents in particular may want to check out the links.  Recommendations were contributed by Bravehearts, Reach Out, Kids Helpline, NetAlert.gov.au and Cybersmart Kids Online.

To a lesser degree, Google's also shown an interest in keeping viruses and malware at bay, so people interested in security might find something pertinent.  And a refresher on what goes into SafeSearch filtering is available if anyone's interested.

One last, not-really-related note: we're happy to report that Google's map of the fires in Australia doesn't look quite so bad today.
