Comcast said today that it has launched its wideband Internet service in four more markets including Chicago, Atlanta, Baltimore and Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

Lynsey Silvesti, Senior Manager, Corporate Communications, Comcast, told WebProNews that the roll out brings the company to its goal of reaching 10 major markets this year.

With its wideband DOCSIS 3.0, Comcast says it now offers among the fastest speeds available, including its Extreme 50 tier with download speeds of up to 50 Mbps. Wideband will also benefit the majority of existing high-speed Internet customers by doubling their speeds at no additional cost.

"This technology, combined with our advanced fiber optic network, will enable us to continue to offer our customers even faster speeds and an entirely new phase of Internet innovation," said Fred Graffam, senior vice president of Comcast's Beltway Region.

Comcast will begin offer its "Extreme 50" service in the new markets with 50 Mbps of downstream speed and up to 10 Mbps of upstream speed for $139.95 per month. It will also offer its "Ultra" service with 22 Mbps of downstream speed and up to 5 Mbps of upstream speed for $62.95 per month.

 Comcast's latest wideband deployment has made it reach its goal of a 20 percent footprint this year. By the end of December, about 10 million homes and business will be able to sign up for the faster service.
