Personally I always use the linkdomain command using yahoo.com
This always seems to give a realistic figure for the number of backlinks going to the domain in total. To use, type in linkdomain:www.yoursite.com into the yahoo search area.
Backlink tracking
I use google search for backlink tracking by entering
link: click2connect.com
for example for my local search site. Just substitute your own url in the search box and perform the search.
