FriendFeed Expands With Six New Interface Languages

The neighborly (and smart) thing to do

There are all sorts of stories about friendships that were formed despite language barriers, and let's not forget that many people have learned how to speak English even if it's not their native tongue.  But FriendFeed has taken a step towards accommodating current members and recruiting new ones by launching six new language interfaces today.

Everyone familiar with French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and simplified Chinese should now be on an equal footing when using the site.  "These languages are some of the most popular ones we've seen on FriendFeed so far," Bret Taylor, one of FriendFeed's cofounders, explained on the company's official blog.

Taylor's not exactly catering to a small niche audience, either, as he also stated, "Almost one-third of our users already participate on FriendFeed in languages other than English."  And support for more languages is supposed to be on the way.

Given the whole economic meltdown situation, international growth could prove extremely important.  A fresh report points out that the market for online contextual advertising in Russia is supposed to increase in size by 12 percent in 2009, for example, and now FriendFeed's in a position where it stands a better chance of benefiting from that.

Foreign language classes never looked so good.
