Userplane Opens Up Chat

Goes trans-social network

AOL’s social software provider Userplane updated its Chat App so that users can access it from any open platform social network. In English, that means users can chat across social networks like MySpace, Facebook, Friendster, Ning, Bebo, and others.

Available on social networks supporting an open API initiative, the move to open up Userplane Webchat could expand usage of the platform from thousands to potentially millions. Already with topic and location-based chat rooms, the sphere of chat a user could incorporate would be effectively limitless.

“If the goal of live chat is to facilitate social interaction and community building on the web, then Userplane’s cross-platform chat application takes this to the next level,” said Sam Wick, General Manager for Userplane and Vice President of AOL.

“Users check in with multiple social communities every day and their connections shouldn’t be limited to that site’s portal.  Cross-platform chat enables true collaboration, and users across the world are embracing this innovation.”

This seems like a smart move, especially for a company having to reinvent itself and specialize in areas beyond email and Internet access.

Open IM

This is a very good idea in some respects.  Allowing open access across multiple sites makes for some great possible connections.  As the developer of IMChat.com I would support an open architecture and hope to work with userplane and AOL in making cross site chat possible.  My hope is we don't stop allowing creativity in individual endeavors by making everything cross platform and open.  I can see a day when we all just get lazy and stop developing the next great thing because of the ease of just copy paste and open API.
