Google announced today that it has updated Google Maps features for the iPhone. This includes the addition of:
- Street View
- Public Transit
- Walking Directions
"The most eye-catching one is Street View," says Mobile Maps software engineer Joe Hughes. "Apple's silky-smooth implementation makes it a joy to pan around the world. You might wonder why you'd want to look at panoramas of the world while you're already out in it, but I've found it handy for getting an idea of what to look for when going somewhere new. In somewhere like New York, it's also a great way to get your bearings when you pop out of a subway station in an unfamiliar part of town."

The public transit feature includes over 100 cities around the world, offering schedules for transportation systems, and this number is likely to grow as more systems elect to participate.

The walking directions feature could certainly be of great use when you're on the go as well. "In a time of congested roads and fluctuating gas prices, driving isn't always the best way to get from A to B, so why limit your options?" says Hughes. "Now when you get directions, you can switch between driving, walking, and public transportation directions (where available) with a single tap."
As an added bonus, you can email info about your location to friends, which can definitely come in handy when you're trying to meet somebody somewhere. To get all of the new features, you have to go to iTunes and update your phone's software. Now some are wondering when these features will become available for Android.

There is far more going on
There is far more going on in the online world of web professionals than Google alone, but not much more according to your coverage. Google is clearly displaying the attributes of the quintessential antithesis of the free-spirited culture that breathed so much social interest, energy and commercial life into the internet - by asserting God-like control over traffic flows in a manner that is serving nobody's best interest except their own. When is that story going to appear in your headlines?
iPhone iPhone iPhone
we hear about little else regarding mobile devices these days ...
The phones the vast majority of people in the real world are using are much older and much more down-market... so its still xhtml mobile and no javascript or flash as far as I'm concerned! ..
..also there are no iPhone emulators that will run on anything other than an intel Mac... so if I were to want to try writing an iPhone app I would have to either shell out for an iPhone or an intel Mac ...
I can't yet justify spending that amount of money.
Okay okay, enough already... about Google
It's hard to imagine a reason why webpronews should not simply be renamed googlenews. Specualation about what Google is and is not apparently, possibly, maybe doing... perhaps... is not news and yet it is now dominating your content. This pattern in your content has been evident for some time, but today was something of a tipping point for me when I realised that Google featured in more than 50% of the 36 stories highlighted in the latest webpronews email headlines.

Get things Straight
I am glad that apple is continuing to update the firmware, but can they get some priorities straight? Like better integration with exchange calendar invites and some copy paste. I would love to replace my blackberry with an IPhone at work, but these basics need to be provided. Sure Street view is nice, but all its going to do is help me find the soup line if I lose my job because I missed a calendar invite.
LOL, and you also make a
LOL, and you also make a good point about the basics.
