Google, Verizon Sued Over "Visual Voicemail"

Patent owner has history of collecting settlements

Judah Klausner is on quite a roll; he seems to have won settlements from Apple, AOL, and Vonage following a series of lawsuits over the last few years.  And now Klausner, through the company Klausner Technologies, is going after Google, Verizon, and LG.

The new lawsuit centers on patents covering visual voicemail, which Eric Auchard describes as "applying a graphical way of interacting with voicemail messages that allow it to be used like e-mail."  It's the same technology Klausner got Apple, AOL, and Vonage to settle over.

The financial details of the fresh suit - and of those old settlements - remain unknown, however, so this may not be a matter of life and death (or business and bankruptcy).  Google and the other defendants don't seem ready to lie down and roll over, either.

A Verizon spokesman told Auchard that his company has filed a lawsuit of its own.  "We anticipated Klausner's action," he stated.  "We are seeking a declaration that Klausner's visual voicemail patent is invalid and that Verizon's system does not infringe the patent in any event."

The Klausner and Verizon suits were filed in Tyler, Texas and the Eastern District of New York, respectively.  Assuming no more settlements occur, it could be several years before any winners (other than the lawyers) are declared.

I have high respect for any

I have high respect for any company to say when they are right and not back down instead of settling in court, but on the other hand to also say when they have been wrong.

Hopefully Google and Verizon are actually in the right.
