Big gains recordedThe poor old Dow went down almost 225 points today, and we expect that some tears are being shed within certain sectors of the American economy. A new report indicates that Russian advertisers are operating on the opposite end of the spectrum, however, with big year-over-year growth taking place.
The original data comes from MindShare Interaction, but The Moscow Times translated and summarized things to say, "Internet advertising in Russia grew 73 percent to $260 million in the first half of the year and may top $600 million this year."
Interestingly, two troubled American companies - Ford and GM - were named as major contributors to this increase. Several corporations specializing in mobile communications were among the top advertisers, too, which means a race is on in more than one sense.
The mobile market is seen as a huge prize by any number of entities; look at the iPhone and Google's Android just for starters. Then consider where Google's name popped up again: its purchase of the Russian advertising company Begun less than one month ago.
So it seems that a number of Americans will have little reason to resent Russia's success. Don't be surprised if others boost it by attempting to join in.
