Sellers Unhappy About eBay-Buy.com Link

Lots of items, (apparently) lower fees

Leaving aside the issue of whether the company deserves one or not, it seems that eBay can't catch a break.  The latest thing making CEO John Donahoe's life harder is some coverage of eBay's deal with Buy.com.

eBay Buy.com
Buy.com Establishing A Big Presence On eBay

Buy.com's been dealing with eBay on a tentative basis for some time, listing products here and there.  Now, there are 209 items in its store within the auction site, and Brad Stone observes, "it appears from the sheer number of Buy.com listings flooding the site that Buy.com is not paying listing fees."

Compared to normal sellers, this gives Buy.com a clear edge in terms of pricing and profitability.  Buy.com's huge size affords it more advantages.  Normal sellers aren't happy.

Tony Libby told Stone, "As an independent seller, I felt betrayed.  I've paid eBay many hundreds of thousands in fees over the past several years and believed them when they talked about a level playing field.  And they just plain and simple are going back on their word."

A strained relationship between eBay and sellers is quickly becoming the status quo.  Judging from the rate at which recent problems have occurred, at least one other issue will probably pop up in no time.

Not a big surprise

Ebay has not cared about the small seller or buyer for quite some time now. If you have been a buyer dealing with a less than honest power seller you would have found out that ebay allows power sellers to disregard ebay policy without consequence. But a buyer or small seller have their feet held to the fire. Ebay is just like any other no good corporate giant, whether you want to believe it or not the number 'one' concern or objective is to increase shareholder wealth at any cost. There is no priority for safety, employees, or customers that matches or comes close to that of profits. Say what you want that is the way it is and if you believe otherwise, you live in a fantasy world! The best way to deal with this is to deal with the mom & pop shops. Even if costs a little more I will support the mom & pop shops.

Ebay doesn't care about

Ebay doesn't care about anybody, not the seller, not the buyer, not the stockholders.  Bottom line is revenue at any cost!  Buy.com serves just one big purpose - they flood the deflated listings with their items.  Their lowly 2.3 sell thru rate and reduced listing fees does not profit Ebay but still makes them "look" successful.  Buy.com's main purpose right now is to hide the fact that so many of ebay's sellers have left for other venues, or to open their own websites or just plain quit in disgust.  Ebay long ago lost sight of the fact that sellers need to profit or selling on Ebay or anyplace else is just not worthwhile.  With every stupid new policy, with every stupid new restriction and hoop to jump thru Ebay loses more sellers AND don't be fooled into thinking that's what they want because those sellers are also BUYERS!
