Google, Facebook Release iPhone Applications

Focus on speed and convenience

Whether you love the device or hate it, stories about the iPhone are going to be hard to escape for a few weeks.  Google and Facebook appear to fall into that first category, and have added to the hubbub by releasing iPhone-specific applications.

iPhones are able to browse the Web, of course, so at first glance, these apps look a little bit redundant.  Their existence speaks to the popularity of the iPhone, though, along with corporate desires to please the device's user base.  And the apps do offer a few new tricks.

Facebook App
 Facebook's Application For The iPhone

A post on the Official Google Blog Announces, "Google Mobile App starts working as soon as you type.  Smart features mean you'll get what you're looking for in fewer key presses than before.  For instance, we've added the power of suggest (type 'lost in' and one touch completes 'lost in translation') and My Location (type 'coffee' and one touch shows cafes right where you are on a map) to help you search."  There's a search offering for the address book, as well.

Then, on the Facebook side of things, "The bottom line is that applications built for the iPhone have access to more technology than websites," according to a blog post.  "For example, with the native application you can take photos with the iPhone's camera and upload them instantly to your Mobile Uploads album on Facebook.  You'll also find the native application is much faster than the website, giving you more reliable access to your Friends, Photos, and Inbox."

So it's more a matter of "icing on the cake" than "revolutionary creations."  Yet since it's a rare person who doesn't like icing, we don't expect to hear many complaints.

Wait in line?

I can't understand standing in line for 2+ hours for a phone.  I have been waiting for iphone for over 6 monthes and nursing my ailing smart phone to make it through.  I went by a couple of stores over the weekend and of course they were sold out of iphones.  Once again apple failed to realize the demand for this phone and has let the buying public down.  I guess this is like anything else, let the "gotta-have-it geeks" get the first "buggy" models and wait for the next model with the bugs fixed.  My biggest complaint is that I was on the list at my local store for the past 4 monthes to get a phone.  I got a call from the store about 2 on Friday saying they had sold out and would I like them to order me one.  My reply to them was that they had my name on their list for 4 monthes to hold me a phone, not to sell it to some geek who stood in line to replace his 2 month old phone so that he could have the latest and greatest just so they could order me a phone to arrive later.  This particular store will NOT get any more of my business, EVER!!!!!!  This new phone had better be all that it is cracked up to be or I will be switching carriers as well.

iPhone Madness!

Buying the iPhone is a high priority and patience is even higher. Knowing full well that there would be issues with the iphone in some form or another, waiting in line for hours and then more hours to "fix" the glitch was not my idea of owning the iPhone.

As was evident on the 11th, there was a glitch, it is being addressed and I did not wait for hours. I am very confident that this is only temporary but I am patient enough to wait for the next shipment of phones to purchase one and have it activated in a timely fashion.

Stood In Line....

Its funny how people who actually did not do anything assume the worst for everyone else. I stood in line for about 2 hours, got my iphone and walked out with a fully activated iphone. Yes there were a few glitches I've heard about as well but there were isolated instances. No problems here. Love it and I've got it before you do.
