One-way streets can be problematic, and many urban areas are the sorts of spots in which cars shouldn't be left unattended.  Then there's the price of gas to consider.  So, for your convenience, Google is experimenting with walking directions.

Judging by a beta tag and the fact that not all users have been included, the mapping test appears to be a rather hesitant one so far.  A don't-get-mugged warning "Use caution when walking in unfamiliar areas" makes an appearance, as well.  Lastly, as either a continuation of that safety message or a caution sign regarding route accuracy, Google asks for users' feedback.

Ionut Alex Chitu notes that the new walking directions nicely complement Google's interest in mass transit, though, and they also mesh well with Street View, making it more useful than ever.

Tourists, city dwellers, and all sorts of people living on or near college campuses are sure to embrace this option.  As for safety and accuracy concerns, any goofs on Google's part should be easy to correct with its "drag to change route" feature.

Google hasn't discussed how long the walking directions will remain in beta or if users might be able to opt into the test group.
