Internet For Everyone Sounds Good To Google

New advocacy group calls for fast Net access as policy

The search advertising company threw its backing behind a broadband penetration advocacy group, citing a need to promote better Internet access policies to the next US political administration.

Google joined with eBay, the ACLU, and several other groups and advocates in forming Internet for Everyone. "Making the Internet accessible to more Americans is part of our corporate DNA," the company's Richard Whitt said on the Google Public Policy blog.

Whitt cited a need for America to catch up to Europe and Asia in broadband availability and quality. Innovation over the last decade delivered a host of new services to those with Internet connections, and the quality of those innovations grew with quicker broadband access.

"The social and economic consequences of America's failure to remain competitive are serious, and we should dedicate ourselves to fixing this deficiency," said Whitt.

Another Google-backed project, the Wireless Innovation Alliance, lists among the supporters of Internet for Everyone. The stated aim of Internet for Everyone should not be taken as its only goal; corporate backers have as much to gain as consumers do from a solid, fast Internet infrastructure.
