Manners For Social Networking

Post to Twitter Post to Facebook

Five golden rules

UK etiquette experts, Debrett's, have created a new set of rules for how to behave on social networks.

The rules were created after research by telecoms company Orange found that 62 percent of social networking users are confused or frustrated by online etiquette. It found that 26 percent were unsure about how to respond to unwanted pokes or messages.

Eighteen percent said they were confused on "how to respond to my ex when in a relationship with someone else."

Jo Bryant, an etiquette advisor from Debrett's said," My advice is to play it safe, and always employ your usual good manners when online, treating others with kindness or respect."

"Social networking is meant to complement and enhance your existing social life, not complicate it," Bryant said.

Mark Watts-Jones, the head of development and innovation at Orange, said "Whether you are checking your Facebook profile on the move or posting photos of friends on MySpace at work, these guidelines will ensure you never lose old friends or make unwanted new ones."

Debrett's golden rules for social networking are:

1. You don't have to make friends with people you don't know. Think before you poke.

2. Wait 24 hours before accepting or removing someone as a friend. The delay will help you gather your thoughts.

3. Birthdays, engagements and weddings are not "virtual" events. Always send cards or phone friends when there is an important event.

4. Think before posting a friend's photo what you would feel like if it was you.

5. Think carefully about your profile picture. Would you want it to be appearing in your local newspaper?

RE: "Think carefully about your profile picture. Would you want it to be appearing in your local newspaper?"

The evil sites of Old Media already perform this bit of wonderfull service of data drilling for the good it does a few in the Private domain... They even have users upload images under free use copyrights and lock them up with digital rights management, apply copyrights, edit blogs to insite hate ideals and generate more sales, etc..

What self interest laws will they invent next? I see people can be arrested for things done over the internet yet I never have seen any Old Media owners arrested? funny, ha.

Oh, back on the SN side of things.. there are a lot of things that need to be done first, that will ensure rights of all parties - these sites claim freeddom but delute into happy sites where one can only write history in such a one sided way (bit more like hit list of the money, or is there FB or Myspace for death row yet.. lol.. newspaper?

:-)

Buy a polaroid

I think I might be tempted to buy a polaroid camera and a CB radio if ever this peice of draconian nastiness ever comes into being.
