Two years isn't too great a run for a product, especially when the people behind its launch would have liked for the thing to overtake Craigslist. Still, according to a post on the official site, Windows Live Expo will "discontinue service" in late July.
Users have already been barred from creating new accounts, posting new listings, extending listings, and upgrading to premium listings, so Live Expo's remaining days will be a matter of letting the current offerings expire. This slow death won't exactly be confidence-inspiring.
Yet since comparisons between Microsoft and Google seem inevitable, we'll note that even the search giant recently decided to trim its product line.
Also, Microsoft deserves credit for letting one of its weakest products go. The company has often been criticized for allowing resource-draining failures to limp along, and as a Microsoft and the Future blog post reasons, "Releasing mediocre services like this is not going to make people use Windows Live at all."
It'll interesting to see if any other classifieds sites get a bump as a result of Live Expo's closure.
