Bernstein: Google, Amazon To Lead Internet

(More than they already do, that is)

If you like simplicity, the view of a new report may suit your tastes.  A Sanford C. Bernstein analyst believes many Internet companies will eventually be acquired or fade away, leaving Google and Amazon as the two main names.

Jeffrey Lindsay's report, titled "U.S. Internet: The End of the Beginning," leaves a reasonable amount of wiggle room.  He believes Yahoo's dealings with Google and Microsoft could give it a short-term boost, for example.

Google And Amazon To Dominate The Internet?

Lindsay doesn't go so far as to claim that Google and Amazon are in perfect shape, either.  Amazon faces sales tax issues, and Google has yet to establish any sort of dominance in the mobile market.

Yet in reference to Yahoo and IAC, Lindsay said, "Arguably the weakest players have strayed furthest from their original competences and have been operating largely as conglomerates," according to Reuters.  As for eBay, Lindsay sees a buyout in its future.

This is hardly the most outlandish set of observations and predictions we've ever come across, and Sanford C. Bernstein is a highly respected research firm.  Google and Amazon are already dominant in many areas, so a simpler Internet landscape may indeed be on its way.
