Alfred Publishing has partnered with Guitar World to offer its catalog on the Guitar World Tabs Web site.
Alfred Publishing controls guitar tabs songs performed by The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Green Day, and Santana.
Users can access user-generated tabs and some of the Guitar World premium tabs for free, embedded in a media player, which is ad supported. For a portion of the premium Guitar World tabs, users will have to pay $.59 to $1.49 to view tabs on a Flash player for 30 days. The tabs cannot be copied, printed or downloaded.
The goal of the partnership is to have a place where users can legally access guitar tabs online. With the large number of guitar tab sites available for free, guitar players are not going to start paying for guitar tabs now.
Many people who play guitar do not need tabs to learn a song and are skilled enough to play by ear. Just as people pirate songs, they will continue to do so with guitar tabs. Not many people will watch an ad online to get guitar tabs when they have access to a large variety of sites who offer the same thing for free and without ads.
