Openness At YouTube Starts With APIs

It's not a video website, it's a platform

New applications programming interfaces, or Awesomely Powerful Interactions if you prefer, allow developers some additional features for creating web video applications.

People who thought YouTube might match Yahoo Live's live-streaming option probably found themselves disappointed at what turned out to be some updated programming features.

For developers who wanted the additional interactions, rejoice, for YouTube delivered. They described the new goodies on the YouTube blog:

Building upon our existing APIs for querying the YouTube library and playing embedded YouTube videos, we have added the following new API services for external developers and partners:
  • Upload videos and video responses to YouTube
  • Add/Edit user and video metadata (titles, descriptions, ratings, comments, favorites, contacts, etc)
  • Fetch localized standard feeds (most viewed, top rated, etc.) for 18 international locales
  • Perform custom queries optimized for 18 international locales
  • Customize player UI and control video playback (pause, play, stop, etc.) through software

Video enthusiasts with particular interests will have more options for making the YouTube player reflect the look and feel of their websites. As the blog post noted about YouTube, "It has become an open, general purpose, video services platform, available for use by just about any third-party website, desktop application, or consumer device."
