 Maimun Yusuf And Posing Voter

Supporters of Maimun Yusuf have helped her create a profile on Facebook and are also running a blog for her (www.maimunbintiyusuf.blogspot.com). She is the oldest election candidate in the country and most likely in the world.

"This is very tiring. I have been going non-stop since nomination day but a lot of people are helping me out, so I'm not pulling out," Yusuf told Reuters. She is running in Kuala Terengganu, capital of Teregganu state.

Yusuf surprised her town when she showed up to register on February 24 as an independent candidate. Since then she has received the support of 24 volunteers and has used the Internet to communicate her message.

On her unusual campaign she said," Alhamdulillah (Thank God), I am happy. I hope it can serve as an example to younger people. They just sit and complain and since no one I knew was willing to fight, I decided that I had to be the one to do it."

She has spent 20,000 ringgit ($6,319) on her campaign so far using most of her savings. As for here election message to voters she says she is upset when young people turn to drugs and that there are a lack of schools. If elected she says, "I will make it all better."

She's a winner!

For me this senior is a winner already!  I am not Malaysian but she would have gotten my vote for even trying and going on the Internet and learning all this new stuff.  She's great and I hope next time around more older as well as younger people will take the iniative in making politics more dynamic for all people.

I am shocked

This is some kind of news mate. An 89 year old grandmother having a blog and a facebook account. WOW!

I guess it's not only for the young but also for the senior citizen too.

Anyway, well done grandma for keeping up with the latest mean of communication.

by the way, did she win the election? Just curious.

Cheers!

Malaysia General Election

Malaysia General Election is over ... if I am not mistaken . she got some 600 votes!

Official Result

Unfortunately she lost in last weekend's March 8 2008 election. She was running for Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat as independent (IND) candidate. Below is the official result:

Grandma Maimun Yusuf (IND) --- 685 votes.
Razali Ismail (BN) --- 32,582 votes.
Mohamad Sabu (PAS) --- 31,934 votes

Hope to see her again in next election with more online campaigns!

Grandmother Goes Online

I am glad someone has found a use for Facebook. I don't see any benefit to having an account. I have an account and it really has done nothing for me.
