FBI calls emails hoax Spam emails threatening death by a hit man unless $20,000 is paid are a hoax the FBI said, restating earlier warnings given in January 2007 and December 2006.
"A new scam cropping up in e-mail boxes across the country is preying not on recipients' greed or good intentions, but on their fears," the FBI said last year.

Internet Crime Complaint Center
"The scam e-mail, which first appeared in December, threatens to kill recipients if they do not pay thousands of dollars to the sender, who purports to be a hired assassin."
The death threat emails usually contain punctuation, spelling and grammar errors. They may also contain personal information used to intimidate the recipient. The spammer's primary goal is to gain access to the recipient's bank account.
The FBI says that people who receive such emails should not be concerned about the use of personal information contained in the bogus messages because it is widely available. They warn not o reply to the spam emails but to report them to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, a partnership of the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center.

This idiot is using forged
This idiot is using forged message headers and yes they are almost for certain a prank, But report them anyway, as your email and copy of the message header may include something viable so that the FBI can catch this bastard.
Word has it that the Monster or Careerbuilder website was hacked and the information was snatched from there. Who knows.
I say down with the critics and posters that say not to report them. Let our big Borther folks earn their keep and attempt to catch this little prick
New death threat e-mail with phone number!
This is the one I just received and interestingly enough they want me to call some stupid number with a 'password' and he'll forget it. Very strange! No I'm not dumb enough to call it but wondered if anyone else had one with no interest in money but an actual phone number to call?
"I am very sorry for you (my name), is a pity that this is how your life is
going to end as soon as you don't comply. As you can see there is no need of introducing myself to you because I don't have any business with you, my duty as I am mailing you now is just to KILL you and I have to do it
as I have already been paid for that.
But I give you a chance. Call my neighbor 315-678-2789 and say password "there is time to save my skin" and if that would sound convincing, I will forget about you.
Tell him this password for Timothy Sinclair (be sure it is not my real name).
WARNING: DO NOT THINK OF CONTACTING THE POLICE OR EVEN TELLING ANYONE
BECAUSE I WILL KNOW."
I got the exact same email
I got the exact same email this afternoon The email subject said Hi (my name) Heroin, cocaine and other shit from timothystuff. the rest of the letter was exactly what yours says.
Oh, will you stop the whining!?!?!
Ok i might be jaded, go ahead and call me an insensitive prick, but really, am i the only one that feels that 419 scam letters and emails sound like a bunch of tacky movie lines?
"WARNING: DO NOT THINK OF CONTACTING THE POLICE OR EVEN TELL ANYONE BECAUSE I WILL KNOW.REMEMBER, SOMEONE WHO KNOWS YOU VERY WELL WANT YOU DEAD! I WILL EXTEND IT TO YOUR FAMILY, INCASE I NOTICE SOMETHING FUNNY."
Jeez... does this punk feel lucky?
Get real, people, the only way to fall for these scams is if you REALLY have something dirty to hide... And then you go cry to the authorities because somebody bluffed you into admitting guilt for something he didn't even know in the first place?
You know, i am as liberal as they come, but this is where i draw the line. We worry so much about the Patriot Act, but then we still live in fear! We think we are so safe in our own homes, but then someone visits our Myspace page and grabs a couple of random information and then puts together a letter threatenign to kill us... and we are surprised!!! JEEZ!!! HOW DO THEY EVEN KNOW THAT MY GIRLFRIEND'S CAT'S NAME IS GOOFY, AND MY DAUGHTER IS IN 5th GRADE AT SUCH AND SUCH SCHOOL?? AND THAT HER SCHOOL SCHEDULE IS, ETC, ETC.... (like they can't call the school and ask for schedules).
Stop acting dumb, nation. If you really ARE concerned about your safety, ACT LIKE IT. Don't spread your life all over the Internet and then complain about the FBI spying on your dumb ass.

New Death Threat
Hello everyone,
I am the one who received this death threat June 10, 2008. I want to make sure everyone see the new version since it comes in different forms.
Death threat
Hey i got the same type of email but they are only asking for 3,000 dollars.
Must be he is going to use a cheaper way of killing me or Im close and they dont need to spend as much on gas to get here.
Whatever the case Im not worried about it cause most spammers arent smart enough to find their way across the street.
Death threat email
I live in London, UK and received an identically worded email. I have a car advertised for sale on various websites with my contact details including telephone numbers and an email address so that potential purchasers can contact me. I did, however, take the precaution of setting up a specific email address for this purpose, so that if I was sent anything odd, I would know where they had found my details. The threat also itemised one of my contact numbers from the ad. I took a copy of the email straight to my local police and I also reported the matter as abuse to Yahooo (from where the email was sent) , neither have even bothered coming back to me with any reassurance. No-one seems to bother about this sort of intimidation, except those of us on the receiving end of it.
Just an update on the
Just an update on the message I left on 05/21/08, in fairness to our UK police, they have now come back to me and the matter is being investigated, I still have heard nothing from Yahoo, however. I only receiveved the email death threat on 05/19/08 so this scam is obviously still current, they were demanding £15,000 from me. On discussing the matter with the investigating officer, he explained that these individuals often operate from internet cafe's and can be in any part of the world, and as fast as they can close their email address's down, these fraudsters invariably just set up new ones and continue operating.
Be careful if you advertise anything for sale displaying your contact details, because that is how I know thay came across mine, as I have a car advertised for sale on various websites. If you receive a death threat email, do not reply to it, they may not be serious about killing people but they are certainly intent on extracting money from us.
Death Threat
I have just received my very own death threat today. The hitman is supposed to be arriving next week to kill me. He didn't ask for any money on this original death threat email, however wanted me to reply to him/her? I won't stoop that low. It did shake me up for a couple of hours, but the way it was written convinced me that the sender doens't even have any idea who I was. I was a RECIPIENTS with an "s" at the end.... First, the subject area had SOME ONE A FRIEND WANTS YOU DEAD I don't have any friend that has that kind of cash to spend on me. Then, they are the hands-on type people, they would do it themselves. I had to turn this to a joke.... It's not funny, I am proactive in this battle.
I have contacted the police and the TV station. I hope it will air soon. My advice to you all reading this is to call your local TV stations and share this email and infomation. The more people know about this, the less power and impact the death threat will have. After all, we need to take care of each other.
If you let these people
If you let these people control you emotions by making you afraid, they have already won. dont get scared dont hype it up. we all die sometime, no need to get stressed over some douche trying to make a buck.
Death Threat Email
I recieved a death threat email yesterday and it terrified me,I agree with the others that have recieved these emails...SOMETHING MUST BE DONE ABOUT THESE PEOPLE WHO ARE DOING THIS and I am doing my very best to do my part to see that these people are caught. I urge anyone else who gets one of these to notify your local law enforcement and/or your State Attorney General's Office.
Man, this really freaked me out.
I just got the same e-mail. Tons of grammatical errors, and a threat to kill my dad if they didn't get however-many thousands of dollars. They said they had spies on us and everything, and what's worse, the e-mail came from a life insurance company (axa.com). I think they were trying to get some business.
Threatening e-mails
I would totally ignore and delete an e-mail that was threatening. Some people have no life and they go around scaring the daylights out of people. How sick is that?
I haven't got it but, if he
I haven't got it but, if he does I have something for him and it ain't money and believe me I will use it, It has 9 mm on it and it bites 17 times. I don't take threaths likly, never have and won't.
I received the death threat
I received the death threat email yesterday, it was very disturbing to me.I called my local police station and they said to ignore it unless I knew where it came from, and asked me if I felt threatened. I thought about their comment and then called them back, I asked for the fraud dept.
I called the FBI, the person I spoke to their said that probably nothing could be done, but to forward this on to them.
Isn't it against the law to threaten to kill someone?, with all their technology why can't they find out who is doing this?
I hope they catch this person.
Kidnapping & Death Threats
I have received 2 Kidnapping & 1 Death threat in 2 weeks.
The Kidnapper wants 5000.00 the Killer wants 15,000.00.
I haven't replied to any. But I do want them to stop,
What can I do?
DEATH THREAT
This is Crazy! Why isnt something being done to stop these emails. this scared the heck out of me and my family. I have spent the last several hours calling all my family and friends to warn them about this email.... Something needs to be done!!!
i just received the same
i just received the same email but it was for 15000$ what is being done about this it scared me and i think someone should get to the bottom of it
death threat email
I just received this email, almost died, still shaking, but I've received many scam emails and wanted to check to make sure if this one was or not, so I typed in the address into google and sure enough an article popped up THANK GOD! I'm still afraid to go out, who knows, maybe this one thime won't be a scam?
I just recieved the same
I just recieved the same threatning email today as rich did. Should I forward this to my email provider?
I received the 'death threat' email
FYI
I received the above mentioned email so I clicked on your link to the 'CENTER' to report it BUT below is what they said in regards to that type of scam/spam. Needless to say, I DO NOT FEEL THREATENED! but I would think it should be report to some kind of law enforcement agency.
Q: Can I file a complaint if I have been threatened over the Internet via email, chat room, or on a website?
If you think your life is in danger, please contact your local and/or state police immediately!
I received the same "death threat" email
I did not feel threaten either. The email came to my work email address. At the end of the email it gives 2 email addresses for me to reply. Of course I did not. My question or comment is one of the addresses given was a yahoo.com address. Can Yahoo investigate and block a member from using server email address for such emails? The sample email was exactly the one I got word for word.
Something has to be done about this low-life
Hello,
I also recieved the same "death threat" e-mail as well and i live all the way in florida, supposedly this scam has already gone across the country by now. My life doesn't feel threatened, however it angers me that someone that low would make up such a vile e-mail and send it to scare people. How sick! It's sad what people would do now-a-days to get money, they will do anything! Then it says if you recieve such an e-mail to contact local authorities....well lets see... "i"f i called and told them such a thing they would probably think i was nuts and to not worry about it"to be honest.Maybe yahoo can find this loser and ban him for good:)
Example of email
Below is the actual threat email I received:
======
ATTN.
I am very sorry for you, is a pity that this is how your life is going to end as soon as you don't comply. As you can see there is no need of introducing myself to you because I don't have any business with you, my duty as I am mailing you now is just to KILL you and I have to do it as I have already been paid for that.
Someone you call a friend wants you Dead by all means, and the person have spent a lot of money on this, the person also came to us and told me that he want you dead and he provided us with your name ,picture and other necessary information's we needed about you. So I sent my boys to track you down and they have carried out the necessary investigation needed for the operation on you, and they have done that but I told them not to kill you that I will like to contact you and see if your life is Important to you or not since their findings shows that you are innocent.
I called my client back and ask him of you email address which I didn't tell him what I wanted to do with it and he gave it to me and I am using it to contact you now. As I am writing to you now my men are monitoring you and they are telling me everything about you.
Now do you want to LIVE OR DIE? As someone has paid us to kill you. Get back to me now if you are ready to pay some fees to spare your life, $30,000 is all you need to spend You will first of all pay $5,000 then I will send the tape to you and when the tape get to you, you will pay the remaining $25,000. If you are not ready for my help, then I will carry on with my job straight-up.
WARNING: DO NOT THINK OF CONTACTING THE POLICE OR EVEN TELL ANYONE BECAUSE I WILL KNOW.REMEMBER, SOMEONE WHO KNOWS YOU VERY WELL WANT YOU DEAD! I WILL EXTEND IT TO YOUR FAMILY, INCASE I NOTICE SOMETHING FUNNY.
DO NOT COME OUT ONCE IT IS 7:PM UNTIL I MAKE OUT TIME TO SEE YOU AND GIVE YOU THE TAPE OF MY DISCUSSION WITH THE PERSON WHO WANT YOU DEAD THEN YOU CAN USE IT TO TAKE ANY LEGAL ACTION. GOOD LUCK AS I AWAIT YOUR REPLY TO THIS E-MAIL CONTACT
