Yahoos Sound Off On Being Laid Off

A day of transition for the portal
Yahoo sent a lot of people packing as layoffs began in earnest, with a few of the departing using their blogs to comment on the situation.

Sunnyvale probably seems a little less sunny for hundreds of people who made Yahoo their home away from home. Reports have trickled in from all points on the blogosphere about the last day at work for a handful of Yahoos known among bloggers.

One Yahoo didn't bother waiting for the proverbial tap on the shoulder. TechCrunch said Bradley Horowitz, head of Yahoo’s Advanced Technology Division, decided to leave for the greener pastures at rival Google, although he probably wasn't a layoff target, judging by his role in the company.

Two guys who labored on CEO Jerry Yang's secret plan for saving the company (so secret that Valleywag had a post about it) took a layoff hit. Randy Farmer and Chip Morningstar expressed surprise at being let go, considering their "strong contributor/leadership roles."

Yahoo's Brickhouse leader Salim Ismael wrapped up a year with the company by taking the package and departing. Ismael said on his blog he would tie up some loose ends at Brickhouse over the next few weeks before looking at some startups.

Susan Mernit from Yahoo Personals got the turn-down from Yahoo. She took the opportunity to demonstrate how the much-discussed social graph worked after posting the news; over 100 responses to her by email, Facebook, Twitter, and blog comments arrived within 6 hours of the news.

The traumatic change in employment status may end well for many of the ex-Yahoos. Turning to Valleywag again, a couple of self-described former employees said they haven't met anyone yet who left Yahoo and didn't end up happier and better off.
