Three of the undersea Internet cables that were mysteriously cut last week are expected to be repaired by Sunday, Flag Telecom says.
Two cables in the Mediterranean off the coast of Egypt and one cable 56 km off the coast of Dubai were severed last week, disrupting Internet service for up to 75% of the entire region, including India.
Large companies with sufficient back-up infrastructure were largely unaffected, but smaller companies have had significant troubles.
The blogosphere erupted with conspiracy theories, reporting up to six cables damaged. The cut near Dubai has been blamed on an abandoned ship anchor. Anchors were originally blamed for the cable cuts near Egypt, but Egyptian authorities said there were no ships in the region at the time, and the area is considered a no-float zone.
Conspiracy theorists posed any number of possibilities, blaming anyone from al-Qaeda to Iran to the US. But we're sticking with our original theory: terrorist sharks.
An addendum to that: with frickin' lasers attached their heads.
