Microsoft's revenue easily passed $16 billion for its second financial quarter of 2008. Operating income reached $6.48 billion, and the company earned $0.50 cents per share.
Microsoft executives touted sales of Windows Vista, their latest operating system. With roughly a year of general availability, the company has sold over 100 million licenses for the product.
On the enterprise software side, new versions of Office, SharePoint, and Exchange that launched in November 2007 boosted the fortunes of Microsoft's Business Division.
Consumer demand helped greatly during the holidays, as the 80GB Zune media player became a hot item for gadget shoppers. However, Microsoft has suffered on the bottom line as problems with the Xbox 360 game console surfaced last year.
In July 2007, Microsoft disclosed costs for fixing the "Red Ring of Death" on the consoles could ring up as much as $1.15 billion, according to Forbes.
