Target Gets Into Digital Music

Offering John Legend Album Exclusively

Retailer Target is trying its hand at digital music with the launch of a SonyBMG album.

Target

The new album by John Legend, "Live From Philadelphia" is available exclusively at Target stores and in MP3 format at Target.com. The collaboration with SonyBMG is being powered by Hip Digital Media.

A Target representative said the initiative offers a template for future, artist-focused digital promotions, digital music news is reporting. On Monday the representative said the retailer had been a "sleeping giant in the digital space up until now," and vowed to "take music and content to the forefront of the digital world."

It's not clear if Target will launch a broader digital music store or just stick to its partnership with SonyBMG. Target would face tough competition from iTunes, Amazon.com and Wal-Mart.

The 19 song Legend album download retails for $9.99. No singles are available. Physical versions of the album are available exclusively at Target.
