Bush defender swapped for new firm, 9/11 CommissionerPhil Beck represented the George W. Bush campaign in Florida during the disputed 2000 election, but he won't tote the heavy briefcase for Google against Viacom.
Google won't lose out if an attorney's profile means anything in a case. We're inclined to believe courtroom ability is more important; after all, look how My Cousin Vinny worked out for everyone.
That was humor, folks, it's Friday. Exhale, already.
MarketWatch said Google filed notice with US District Court in New York, advising of the change. Beck of Bartlit Beck Herman Palenchar & Scott also worked with the Department of Justice as it settled its antitrust investigation of software giant Microsoft.
9/11 Commissioner Richard Ben-Veniste, and Andy Schapiro, of Mayer Brown take over for Beck's group as Google faces off against Viacom and its billion dollar copyright infringement lawsuit against Google and YouTube. A Google rep commented to MarketWatch on the change:
Google litigation counsel Catherine Lacavera said in a prepared statement that, "We decided to make this change because it appeared that scheduling conflicts might pose problems as we move into the more active stages of discovery."
Lacavera added that, "Mayer Brown has a substantial presence and history practicing law in New York, where the lawsuits are pending."
The Viacom lawsuit began in March 2007. Google responded to Viacom later that month and denied Viacom's infringement claims.
