Google Eyes Land In Lithuania

Data center deal in the works

It's only natural that companies would compete with each other to be "in vogue" - fashionable, popular, and so on.  But Microsoft and Google may be competing to be in vague, as word comes that Google could build a data center in Lithuania.

Roughly a month and a half ago, David Utter reported that Microsoft intended to construct a data center in Siberia.  Both places will presumably offer some of the same benefits - cheap land and low cooling costs.  Also, both deals seem to be in the not-quite-solidified-but-relatively-sure-to-happen stage of development.Google Eyes Land In Lithuania

In reference to the Google-Lithuania relationship, Reuters states, "The government has proposed locating the centre near a hydro power plant in Kaisiadoriu district, central Lithuania, and the negotiations over investment were to be closed soon . . ."

Construction costs aside, this probably won't have much of an effect on the local economy - large crews aren't needed to operate data centers.  Assuming the data center is built, it'll be interesting to see where employees comes from, though - depending on a person's interests, getting stationed in Lithuania could be either a punishment or a huge reward for the Mountain View crew.

News are favoured by Lithuanian IT specialists

I've noticed quite a bit of excitement among the IT specialists in Lithuania when the news spread. They seem to believe they would be getting a chance of employment!

On the same note, there were rumours in the Lithuanian press that this data center would not only serve Eastern European markets, but also cover Russia. Considering that Russian language is still widely spoken in Lithuania, which is now part of EU, this does seem to be a clever move.
