Nielsen Releases November Search Data

Google gains more ground

Just in time for New Year's Eve (or the weekend before it, actually), Nielsen Online has good news for Google: between October and November, the search giant's market share went up by about 2.2 percent.

This gives Google 57.7 percent of the search pie.  Google's nearest competitor, Yahoo, has just 17.9 percent, and actually dropped 0.9 percent from its October standing.  Things were similarly gloomy for MSN and Ask, which lost 1.8 percent and 0.2 percent of market share, respectively, and landed at 12.0 percent and 2.7 percent.Nielsen Releases November Search Data

The one non-Google search property that did well in November was AOL; although its market share of 4.5 percent is still tiny, this represents an increase of 0.8 percent over its October numbers.

Admittedly, none of this data indicates any major changes, but it does correspond to some ongoing trends.  Whether they're churning out updates or simply sitting idle, engines other than Google simply don't do so well - a chart constructed by Stoney deGeyter illustrates this point.

We'll see if they can turn things around in December and the beginning of 2008.
