Its Been A Very Good Year

Internet traffic to Web sites that sell wine has increased 35 percent in 2007 compared to 2006 according to Winezap.com.

That increase is more than twice as much as retail e-commerce traffic over all, which is up 15 percent over 2006 according to Hitwise.

Winezap says the growth is due to deregulation of interstate shipping and Internet purchasing for wine. The company also cited millennials, who are comfortable with shopping online, are now of drinking age.

"Purchasing wine online is a fairly new concept for Americans," said Michael Stajer of Winezap.com. "It wasn't really until 2005 that many of the restrictions on wine selling were lifted, allowing customers to finally purchase a bottle from somewhere other than the shop down the street."

U.S. consumers born after 1980 are the fastest-growing segment of wine consumers, and they are expected to drive the beverage market for the near future, according to the Wine Market Council.
