Google Wins Award For Its Treatment Of Women

Google is often recognized as being one of the world’s best places to work, and a new development won’t change that reputation; the search giant was, in fact, just recognized by the British Computer Society for its treatment of women in the IT Industry.

Richard Thurston As reported by Richard Thurston, the BCS identified Google as “the employer who has done the most to promote the careers of women in IT.”  He later noted, “Google beat off competition from, among others, Microsoft, Guardian News & Media, Nominet and Accenture to win the accolade.”

That’s not too surprising - Marissa Mayer is more or less a household name within the search industry, and Susan Wojcicki and Niniane Wang have received a reasonable amount of attention.  We shouldn’t forget Vanessa Fox, either, even if she’s moved on (and perhaps especially since she’s moved on).

The BCS award probably won’t change things on a large-scale level - Google never had a bad reputation that needed correcting.  Still, a few more women might be encouraged to apply, and, for that matter, a few more single men might want do the same.
