Google has expunged more than 40,000 websites from its search index, removing a ton of sites because they contain malware.

These websites were designed to install malicious software on the computers of people who stumbled on them, including spyware, viruses, adware and so-called “trojan horse” software, and by removing it, Google blocks their access to a steady stream of unsuspecting search users.

Google has taken moves before to protect users, including putting warnings before users went to these sites, but clearly they saw that passive protection is not enough. Malware sites typically have little of value to offer anyway, so its good to see Google taking a more active stance.
