MySpace Working on News Feed Feature
MySpace is working on a News Feed feature of its own, reminiscent of Facebook’s own feature, Reuters reports.
And while Fox Interactive Media President Peter Levinsohn told Reuters the time line was 30-45 days, Michael Arrington reports that they’re coming a bit sooner than that. Try Thursday—except in Ireland and New Zealand, where they’ve already been testing it.
Arrington has screenshots (right) of the eerily-familiar-looking mock up of the feed, which will be called Friends Updates. (Cryptic, I know.)
MySpace is prepared to thwart the potential backlash. If you don’t recall, over 100,000 people signed a petition against Facebook’s news feeds (no idea how many have signed the petition against Project Beacon/Social Ads).
However, as TechCrunch reports, MySpace seems to have looked into this. He says that users can opt out of the tracking/reporting altogether as well as control what kinds of messages appear in their feeds (capabilities which Facebook eventually added). You also have choices over which of your MySpace friends you track and to what extent, as well as control over who can watch your Friends Updates.
Levinsohn also told Reuters that MySpace plans to allow users to create different profiles to use with school, work, and family and other friends.
